Under what circumstances is it okay for you to undercharge yourself, or do professional art for free or for promises of “exposure?”
NEVER!
The exception is for, maybe, the very best friends and family. Or if you are willingly donating your time to a cause or charity. Nobody else, guys, seriously.
If you are a growing artist, don’t undercharge yourself. Charge what you’re worth. If that is lower than someone else with mad skills you don’t have yet, then that is fair. When you improve, charge more. If someone wants you to do work for free, tell them to pay you or fuck off. Your time and your experience is precious! Nowadays with things like Kickstarter it is possible to be recompensed for even things like independent comic anthologies or art books.
Someone just noted me asking me for unique monthly material and had the nerve to get pissy at me because I told them I wasn’t interested in working for free, and that it was insulting for them to ask. Anyone who does that to you thinks that your time is worthless, and by extension, you. If you care about your art and work hard, you should be paid a professional wage and never ever let anyone tell you different.

These are so pretty! I bet my mom would love them.
All Natural Graffiti
Unlike spray paint, moss graffiti is all natural and healthy to work with. You can paint words or images, and the moss fills in like magic! It’s easy as pie to whip up a batch of moss paint.
Here’s how, in your blender, combine:
- One can of cheap beer or 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- A few handfuls of moss
- One teaspoon of sugar
Blend until the mixture is smooth, and you’re ready to get painting! You can use a brush to paint your moss onto concrete walls, rocks, or brick. Mist the moss once a day to help it thrive, and soon your green graffiti will take hold!
I am not condoning vandalism, but this is just a really cool idea.
also, being a type nerd, those letters are really well done. I wanna try this.
I am condoning this kind of artistic vandalism.
I agree with (most of) the above comments
